Sarah Lowe, born in 1811, was the daughter of John Lowe, the proprietor of Mount Pleasant in St. Ann, Jamaica. Unfortunately, her mother's identity remains unknown.
In 1839, Sarah entered into matrimony with Charles James Grange in Westminster, London. At the time of their marriage, she was a widow, previously known as Sarah Dollar. It is noteworthy that by 1832, the ownership of the Mount Pleasant plantation had passed to Andrew Dollar, possibly her first husband, and subsequently, it came under Sarah Dollar's ownership by 1834, presumably following Andrew's demise. In 1836, Sarah Dollar filed a claim for 39 enslaved people, seeking compensation in the amount of £702 4s 10d. The 1841 census reveals Charles and Sarah residing with a daughter named Sarah, reportedly aged 5. This birthdate appears to predate their marriage in 1839, although no official birth record has been located. There may have been an error in recording the child's age, especially since Charles is not listed as the head of the household. They shared their residence with Joseph Hill, a Musician, and his wife. It is plausible that Sarah accompanied Charles to Sierra Leone when he tragically succumbed to Yellow fever in 1859, as she is notably absent from the 1851 census. In 1867, Sarah embarked on a new chapter in her life by marrying Edward Henry Gauntlett in Chelsea, London. Edward was engaged in the Shipping & Insurance business. In 1884, Sarah passed away in Croydon, London. Her obituary reads as follows: "GAUNTLETT.— On October 27th, at South Norwood, Sarah Gauntlett (nee Lowe, of Mount Pleasant, St. Ann's, Jamaica), the beloved wife of E. H. Gauntlett." |
