Mary Catherine Grange, born in 1804 in Chelsea, London, was the daughter of James Grange Esq, an esteemed Senior Clerk at HM Treasury, and Mary Godwin Cameron, whose lineage traced back to Charles Cameron, a distinguished architect in the service of Catherine the Great of Russia.
Mary's early life remains cloaked in mystery, and she chose a life of independence, never entering the bonds of matrimony. In the inaugural census of 1841, we find Mary residing alongside her sisters, including Augusta and her husband, the distinguished Sir William Ogilvie Bart, at Grove Lane, Queen's Row, Lambeth, Surrey, England. A decade later, in 1851, Mary once again finds herself in the company of her brother-in-law, Sir William Ogilvie Bart, and Augusta, alongside her unmarried sisters, forming a close-knit family unit. In the years spanning 1861 to 1871, the passing of Sir William Ogilvie Bart leaves Augusta alone in London. During this time, all the sisters find solace in each other's company, sharing a residence at Paultons Street, Chelsea, London. It is noteworthy that the sisters receive financial support from the Russian Government, a pension initially promised to James Grange and his offspring by Tsar Alexander I of Russia, a testament to the enduring friendship forged between James Grange and the Tsar during their shared upbringing at the Russian court. By 1881, Mary's circumstances have evolved, and she assumes the role of a lodger, no longer residing with her sisters. Her new dwelling is situated on Fernlea Road, Streatham, London. Ultimately, Mary Catherine Grange's journey came to an end in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England. Her final resting place remains a mystery, obscured by the sands of time. |
