Notes
Jane was born in 1819 to Sir William Ogilvie and Cathrine Hughes. It’s likely that she was illegitimate, but she was later baptised with her siblings in 1827 several years after their father's death.
It seems likely that Jane ends up in the Trades Maiden Hospital, Edinburgh which was a boarding school for daughters and granddaughters of decayed craftsmen. In Jane’s case it wasn’t her father or grandfather who was the craftsman but her mother's husband George Davidson who was a weaver.
Jane married William Alfred Dawson a Merchant and Plantation Owner from Mobile, Alabama, USA. They married in 1842 at 25 Albany Street, Edinburgh which we believe was the residence of the Patison sisters (Sir William’s wife Christian Patison’s sisters). Their marriage was likely organised by her half-brother Sir William. Janes brings her younger sister Helen with her to Mobile.
Jane and William have eight children together between 1842 and 1857.
Jane died at Spring Hall, Mobile, Alabama, USA in 1859 and was interred in their family burial ground at Spring Hill Graveyard where William Alfred Dawson later joined her in 1870.
