Additional Info

James Camille Albert Grange was born in Bruges in 1853 to James Grange Esq, late of HM Treasury in Great Britain, and his third wife, Cathérine Pauline De Rudder. Remarkably, his father would have been 76 years old at the time of James’s birth, while his mother was only 22.

In 1883, James entered matrimony with Amy Mary Stewart, the daughter of Dr. Zachariah Robert Stewart, a respected physician in Torquay, Devon, England. Described as a gentleman, James, and his bride, Amy, a lady, exchanged vows at the British Consulate in Ostend, Belgium, followed by a religious ceremony in Bruges.

However, marital bliss seemed short-lived as, in 1887, Amy filed for divorce, alleging James’s infidelity with persons unknown. James sought refuge in Bruges, residing with his mother during the ensuing legal proceedings.

Despite Amy’s petition, subsequent census records indicate that the couple remained together. James, living on private means, likely received a pension from the Russian Government, akin to his sisters. However, this income stream might have ceased with Tsar Nicholas II’s abdication in 1917.

James eventually passed away in 1927 in Newton Abbot, Devon. At the time of his death, he was associated with the Cary Estate Office in Torquay. His probate records reveal an estate valued at £2335 9s 7d, bequeathed to Frank Shipway (1877 – 1939), a surveyor.
