Notes | ||
Helen was born in 1821 to Sir William Ogilvie and Cathrine Hughes. It’s likely that she was illegitimate, but she was later baptised with her siblings in 1827 several years after their father's death.
It seems likely that Helen ends up in the Trades Maiden Hospital, Edinburgh which was a boarding school for daughters and granddaughters of decayed craftsmen. In Helen’s case it wasn’t her father or grandfather who was the craftsman but her mother's husband George Davidson who was a weaver. Helen then accompanies her sister Jane to Mobile, Alabama, USA after her marriage to William Alfred Dawson in 1842. It’s believed she then lived with them at Spring Hall, Mobile. In 1845 Helen dies and is buried in the Dawson family burial ground in a table tomb with the following inscription: Sacred to the memory of Helen Ogilvie daughter of the late Sir William Ogilvie of Bayne and Carnousee, Baronet Banffshire. Born at Edinburgh 1 December 1821 Died at Spring Hill, Mobile 20 November 1845. Erected by her brother – in – law, William Alfred Dawson Esq. of Spring Hill. Blessed are the dead which are in the Lord |
