Notes | ||
Charles James, born in 1815 in Chelsea, London, was the son of James Grange Esq, a Senior Clerk of HM Treasury, and Mary Godwin Cameron, the daughter of Charles Cameron, an architect in the service of Catherine the Great of Russia.
He entered into matrimony with Sarah Dollar, formerly Lowe, a widow hailing from St. Ann, Jamaica. Notably, Sarah's father, John Lowe, was the proprietor of the Mount Pleasant plantation in St. Ann. Their union blessed them with a daughter named Sarah. Regrettably, the fate of young Sarah remains shrouded in mystery, as no information about her is available after the 1841 census, suggesting a possible premature passing. In 1841, Charles severed his partnership with John Hooper, dissolving their carriage agency located at Regent Street, Waterloo Place, London. By 1846, Charles and his brother undertook the role of agents in their father James Grange Esq's bankruptcy proceedings. At that time, James Grange had relocated to Bruges, Belgium, leaving the country. From preserved family correspondence, it is documented that Charles met his demise in Sierra Leone in 1859, succumbing to Yellow fever. Unfortunately, no official records have surfaced to substantiate this account or provide insight into the circumstances surrounding his presence in Sierra Leone. |
