Notes | ||
Alexander Porter Grange, born in 1808 in Marylebone, London, was the proud son of James Grange Esq, a distinguished Senior Clerk at HM Treasury, and Mary Godwin Cameron, whose lineage traced back to Charles Cameron, an esteemed architect in the service of Catherine the Great of Russia. His second name, Porter, was a cherished family legacy, passed down from his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Porter.
In 1840, Alexander embarked on a new chapter in his life, exchanging vows with Ruth Rose Drew in Camberwell, London. Ruth originates from Bombay, India, where she was born to George Frederic Drew and Ruth Mary Drew. Unfortunately, historical records provide little insight into her family. By 1846, Alexander and his brother shouldered the responsibility of representing their father, James Grange Esq, in complex bankruptcy proceedings. During this period, James Grange had relocated to the picturesque city of Bruges, Belgium, marking a significant change in his life. In 1850, Alexander and his wife, Ruth, made the bold decision to immigrate to Bruges, Belgium, possibly motivated by a desire to reunite with Alexander's father and start anew in a different land. Tragically, Ruth's life met its end in Bruges, Belgium, in 1865. She found her final resting place in the Central Cemetery of the city. A year later, in 1866, Alexander followed her into eternity in Bruges. His interment took place in a special compartment reserved for Protestants, and his coffin bore the number 41. Regrettably, the grave's existence does not endure in the annals of time. |
